In Student Services, there are 3 counsellors and our secretary, Mrs. Lane-White. Counsellors are responsible for students’ needs and inquiries, based on the student’s last name. However, for personal issues students can choose the counsellor with who they feel most comfortable.

As of the first week of October, all timetable changes were made to ensure that students are in appropriate courses and levels of study. Thank you to all students, staff and parents for your patience with this lengthy process.
Our department visited Grade 9 Religion classes in October to introduce ourselves, discuss our roles in the school and to begin preparation for Take our Kids to Work, which takes place on Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011. This event provides an opportunity for students to see what kind of work parents, relatives or friends might do in their workplace. This is a national program that has been running for about 15 years, which provides the first glimpse for many students of workplaces and careers. For any families with students in grade 8, we take advantage of our grade 9’s being out on Nov 2nd and invite our incoming grade 8 students into the school to follow a mini-timetable for the morning to “catch a glimpse of high school”, in Take our Kids to High School. This is one in a series of events to assist the grade 8’s transitioning to high school.
On Thursday October 8th, we hosted our annual Post-Secondary Evening. We have a general presentation on applications and scholarships and then the students and parents rotate through 3 half hour sessions with the representatives from Ontario Colleges and Universities. This year, we had 14 reps to present information and answer questions about post-secondary programs.
As a follow-up to the post-secondary evening, we hold small group sessions for both university and college applicants so that students can be provided with printed resources, access codes and the skills to apply on-line to www.ontariocolleges.ca and www.ouac.on.ca, the university application site. The group sessions are offered during the school day in our computer lab and students sign up for a convenient session. These will take place in November.
University application deadline is January 13, 2010.
College applications are due by February 1, 2010 for equal consideration in competitive or oversubscribed programs.
We will hold information sessions in the spring for students interested in pursuing careers in apprenticeships and skilled trades. We will have lunchtime presenters for the trades, the Armed Forces and direct entry jobs.
For assistance with post-secondary information, including the area of skilled trades and apprenticeship, scholarship applications, career options, educational difficulties or personal issues, students and parents are invited to contact the student Services Department and make an appointment to meet with a counsellor.
All the best for a great personal and academic year.
